Exclamation 1974 Caprice Classic

I have a 1974 Caprice Classic and I have replaced the fuel filter and did a tune up and yes replacing the distributor cap and rotor as well oil change and tranny was just rebuilt in October of this year so I know the filter and stuff was good there. My problem is the idle is rough and the longer the car runs the more gas you smell along with a burnt smell. It will spit and sputter and try to die. What would be my best bet to start with replacing now?

Rebuild the carb and reset the ignition timing.
