bit of help please...
bit of a problem with the 305.
1. idled low and was occasionally dying when i had the AC on
2. died when i had the steering wheel cranked all the way over
3. i checked all the vaccum hoses and all was good
4. bought some carn cleaner and sprayed it directly into the carb and it didnt help
5. got a tune up... didnt help
6. assumed i needed a new carb
7. went to a shop and instead of getting a new carb they turned up my idle
8. now when im idling and sometimes when accelerating i have an exhaust smoke problem
whats my next step? its an '83 caprice with a 305. its only got about 103,000 original miles on it. original carb and original everything pretty much. other than this problem it runs great and i have never had any problems. get back to me by email or on here or talk to me on AIM

i know the 305's in the late '70's/early '80's had cam shaft problems. the lobes started to wear off after a while (maybe too much time between the exhaust/intake valves open/close cycles) and it sure seems like u r having problems, but describe the smoke more. is it blue/grey in color? or is it black like it's blowing alot of carbon? the problem could very well b the carb needs 2 b rebuilt, but i would try going 2 another shop-a shop that will try and fix the problem, not cover it up. turning up your idle just covers up the real problem, it does nothing 2 fix it.
its blue/grey smoke its not black. i was thinking about going back to the shop and having them turn my idle back down and checking my throttle positioner/Idle speed control. i really want to get it fixed instead of covered up though. not only is it putting out smoke when i idle but whenever im cruising at a steady speed and then stomp it, it hesitates pretty badly. also, it starts up perfect first crank everytime but as soon as i put it in gear and give it any gas at all it dies until i start it back up, then its fine. im thinking more and more everyday that its the carb.
Valve Seals - when adjusting the Idle up can blow a gray/blue smoke.
Check the Valve seals. If your car quits smoking as bad after warming up
could be bad / worn valve seals.
Also changing idle on a carb can cause too much gas in your Air / Gas mixture
of the carb and passing it through to your exhaust and out.
