Just replaced the trunk light on my 89 Caprice. Had the car 4 years and there was never a bulb so I cannot say if it stayed on. I have an under hood light with a mercury or pressure switch which illuminates the light when open but I have found nothing for the trunk light of the Caprice. The light is on always.
Looked everywhere on the lid, hinges and under the package tray. Nothing. I am considering just putting in a simple toggle switch. I very seldom drive at night and have never had need for a trunk light.
Any ideas?

I always carry a tactical flashlight on my belt as a professional driver who often drives at night so don't need a light. You could just pull the light out or install a switch.

 

Obviously there is no switch at all. Guess this is why the PO removed the bulb allowing corrosion to enter the socket - which I changed. I installed a toggle switch mounting it in-line and on the trunk inner shell. Works great. Very bright but as mentioned I will probably never use it as I do not drive in the dark. Thanks for the help.
