Intermittant Starting problems
Good Day
I would appreciate advice. I bought a 2007 Captiva 3.2 LTZ A/T (140 000 km) from a dealer here in South Africa two weeks back. I experience a intermittent starting problem. Some times (about 30% of the times) it crank for quite a few seconds before starting. It happens mostly with the first start in the mornings, and also when the car is hot. The dealer asked me to take the car for a check. The diagnostics pointed to a stretched chain – but the dealer showed me proof that the chain was replaced 5000 km back.
Now:
- Can it be that the chain was incorrectly installed?
- Can the chain be the cause of the starting problem?
Any replies will be appreciated

Long cranking with a cold start is usually a sign of the check valve in the fuel pump being bad or going bad. The hot start problem is something else. If the timing chain were incorrectly installed you would have problems with the way the engine runs.
