Default 2.4L vs 2.2L (Swapping Motors)

I have a 1999 Cavalier (CNG) which I just purchased from the State. Currently it has 99K with the 2.2L motor...runs great, but curious if you can swap motors with a 2.4L motor? Reason I'm asking I've found a 1999 Cavalier with a 2.4L that the owner is going to scrap. Motor and Trans are still functional, but I would rebuild the 2.4 then swap with my current 2.2 and hopefully be able to reconnect the CNG components. I'm not familar with the 2.2 and 2.4 engine family from GM so not sure if it will be a straight swap.

Can't answer your question but my mechanics are big fans of the 2.2's and big opponents to the 2.4's,
they don't like the 2.4 AT ALL.

Thanks for the update. I'll keep my eye open for a 2.2 to rebuild as a backup. Next State auction I'll pickup another CNG Cavalier for my daughter.
