2001 Cavalier Air Conditioning cuts out at stops/temp. goes up

2001 Cavalier Air Conditioning cuts out at stops/temp. goes up
I have a 2001 Cavalier manual trans. 2-door. Whenever I come to a stop the fans keep going but it no longer blows cold air AND the temperature gauge goes up. If I were to not shut off the air condition button the tempurature will eventually go into the red zone. I also hear hissing sounds coming from the vents.
I wondered if it could be low on refrigerant? Because of the hissing sounds. I dont understand why the temperature gauge goes HOT too.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks
