2001 Chevrolet Cavalier 2.2L Engine Knocking
Hey today I left my car running for a few minutes as I ran something up to some ones house.
As I walked back I could hear the engine knocking lightly, It did used to seem to have a top end tick but that seems to be entirely gone and replaced with a knocking sound somewhere around the front of the engine.
At first it really scared me as it seemed to be coming from the bottom end which would suck, but after opening the hood and listening I think its coming from a more central area of the engine.
Only 149,000km's or so on the engine, I'm not sure If the timing chain was ever replaced (probably not) but from what I read they usually don't need to be replaced, at least not like a belt does every 60,000km or so for a belt.
What's your thoughts? Am I just letting this little noisy engine get to me or is that chain a slapping around?
I could probably do the chain myself if it doesn't require pulling the engine, the pulleys and stuff are so close to the body though I think id have to pull the engine just to remove the pulleys...
Edit: I'm thinking pulleys right now. Haven't taken the belt off and felt for play but with the engine running it seems 2 of them are wobbly.
Also all the mechanics I talk to said when a timing chain goes bad there isn't warning signs it will either snap or jump which changes the timing and you won't know till either of those happen.
Can't find anything online about when I should change the timing chain either.
