97 cavalier in shop for recall
I bought a 97 cav with the 2.2 engine and it runs great except some rear brake grabs and a leaking injector making the inside smell like gas sometimes. Well i filled the car with gas one day and when trying to start the car it hesitated during start a little which it does when i fill it up all the way. Once i burn down some gas it will start fine after that. well i had to try to start the car 2 times and it started. I did not hold the key for long maybe 4-5 seconds each time. Well the second time there was some smoke that came from the colum right after the car started (not a lot like it was pouring out). I freaked since I was at the gas pump and turned the motor off. It stopped and then all the suddon with the key in my hand the starter started turning over by itself. I jumped out and unhooked the battery. I pushed the car to a spot away from the pumps and tried to start it again and nothing. I was diagnosing the problem after towing the car to my house and pulled the starter to test it since its so easy to pull off. I wanted to make sure there were no wires there that were crossed. I took starter to the parts store who tested it and said it was good so I asked about the ignition switch and they told me that i might want to check for a recall for my car about this verry issue. I called chevy 800 number and sure as **** It is a recall for the ignition for overheating if the owner holds the key for a long time to try to start the car. I did not do that so it did not make since but i did try to start the car a couple times. I talked to a tech from the same 800 number and he told me with the age of the car and the situation I was having, that over time the switch melted and shorted out (made the starter keep going without the key in) and it was a good thing I unhooked the battery. the car ran great before this great. Its at my local dealer now and they are going to fix the recall issue and the chev number people said they would fix any collateral damage that might have occured from the problem. They are going to do it today (which i did not get a call so i guess they did not) or tomorrow(tues). Im guessing that i should expect to get my car back running. Am I correct on this? I was told that they would install some relay which would prevent the full current from going through the plastic starter switch and melting things. Id like to know as much as I can about this issue before chevy dealer calls me back. Thanks and sorry for a long post!
