Default AC No Cool when IDLE

Greetings;

My 1999 Cavalier with 85K started yesterday not to cool with the AC when at idle in traffic or going slowly. I still get warm air blowing and then when I resume driving the AC cooling works again. Not sure if it was me of the vehicle ahead of me but I thought I smelled something burning?? Any thoughts.

Ihave a 97 cavalier which had this same problem, warm air, and burning smell to. What ended up happening was my compressor died. All I did was empty out the a/c system, remove old compressor, *add oil to the new compressor*, installed the new compressor, vaccumed out the a/c system to get rid of moisture, recharged with R-134a frion, and I now have the best a/c ever. Hope this helps!

OK, I'm not that handy to do the compressor swap myself. Would you recc a dealer or some other place do the job?

any sort of automotive repair shop should be able to handle it. Just price around a lil bit and see what you can find.

Its actually one of the easiest jobs. The only thing you need to remove is the belt, and of course the compressor. ButI wouldn't go to a dealer unless you want to waste your money. The dealer will charge you a huge amount of money for a simple little job. WhatI would do is go to your local parts store and buy a compressor yourself, all you need to tell them is the year, make, and model of your car and they will give you the right compressor.(If you getone from the dealer the price will be insane) Then just find a local small garage or auto repair shop that deals with a/c and have them swap it out and recharge your system. Thats whatI would suggest.
