Anti theft system problem

Anti theft system problem
From what I've read this is a common problem, but I have not yet found a solution. The theft system in my 96 cavalier is preventing me from starting the car. I can put the key in and turn it, it will act like it's going to start but then it dies out and the anti theft light comes on.
It was an intermittent problem for a long time, with several temporary cures, but nothing I do works anymore.
Things I've tried:
I've been told that I need a new Ignition Lock Cylinder, that this can only be done at a chevy dealership, and costs around $400.
Is this my only option? Is this even accurate? Is there a simple way to bypass or disable the anti theft system? I don't care if I have to hot wire it or start the car some unorthodox way - I just want to be able to start the damn thing so I can squeeze the last bit of life out of it.

Things I've tried:
- Flipping the key over
- Using a different key/brand new key
- Starting from Neutral
- Overriding the theft system (lock, unlock, lock, neutral, lock for 5 seconds, unlock)
