Bad frame rust on '03 Cavalier
I have a 2003 Cavalier with terrible rust on the rear frame, in the immediate area of where the rear straight axle connects. It's so bad that I can actually see right through it in places. Can this be patched up by a competent welder, and if so, where would I look for someone to do it?
Thanks a bunch,
Kevin

hard to say without seeing it.
in general this type of repair should be done by a body shop. a unitized body will require removal of the old panel and a new panel welded in. Most welding shops are not equipped for the removal. Ask a bodyshop if they will provide a free estimate. I can tell you that the cost will probably be more than the book value of the car.

That's what I'm afraid of, the potential cost. I'm really stuck here, as a new car is simply out of the question, so perhaps I'll be able to find someone to do it for a reasonable price. If not, I'll just drive it until the rear end falls out, then just walk from that point on.

im sure a welding shop can patch the sub frame to get you by for mush cheaper, but if you do want it done properly you would have to go to a body shop or a decent welding shop. in delaware at my buddys welding shop that i help him start up we had a car that had a roll cage done at one place that claimed they could do it. i dont think they could even do a decent 2" weld. we had to cut everything out they did and re-do it. and we also would do body work as we both owned a few older chevys and had to replace a few rockers lol
