Default Cavalier blowin smoke

My son got rid of his Corsica and picked up a 1995 Cavalier. Its in alot better condition than the Corsica. He sold the Corsica for $700 and picked up the Cavalier for $250. I was told that the engine blew, no big deal my son can pick up a used engine or rebuild kit for about $400.

The guy that he got the car from said that he was driving down the road..heard a ping...saw ALOT of smoke out the back..and lost some power... I drove the car home and it runs rough and I left alot of smoke signals leading home...The guy just a month ago did a complete tuneup so I knew the spark plugs shouldnt look bad..1 and 4 look brand new..2 and 3 have a light coating of oil?? (smells like gas) I drained the oil and to my surprise got about 8 quarts out.

first thing I checked was the radiator which was fine..I expected that because the oil is not milky..the oil does smell like gas..

I would like to know where to start..should we rebuild the motor or is there something else that could be the only issue like injectors???..

Thanks
Kristine

Hole in a piston? Can you pull the plugs and do a visual inspection of the piston tops? With that much gas in the oil it would be where i started.

cant see any holes in the pistons. I did a compression test and this is what I got

1: 150
2: 130
3: 170
4: 125

Pulled the air intake off and there was a bunch of oil in it..PCV valve is ok..EGR was pretty gunked up..

any more ideas??

your compression shouldn't be all over like that, Id start by doing leakdown tests or blowing air into the cylinder and seein if you can hear it come out of the intake or exhaust

Thanks for the info but what is a leakdown test ??? Started it up today and 1 and 4 were not firing..so I checked the coil packs and 1 and 4 was shot..so I replaced the coil pack, put on the new wires and now all 4 are firing...doesnt seem to be smoking as much...hummm
