Default compressor control valve

I have had a slow leak from the V5 AC compressor for a while. I know you can get the part for about $50 from the parts stores but I can't find what the procedure or instructions are for how to to replace it - either on the car or off the car. Has anyone done this? Why is it such a secret? I added some r134a last year in May and it worked for the rest of the 4 months or so that I used the AC but now I am getting nothing at all. Any relevant info or suggestions would be appreciated (other than telling me to take it to a shop). Thx.
