have 95 cavalier, standard engine.

turn ignition switch, hear grinding and flywheel spin. it takes a while of turning ignition for the engine to "hit" and start running. a friend said it was the solenoid not giving enough power. haven't taken it off yet to have it tested.

solenoid and starter are on bottom of engine. use a floor jack?

First off welcome to the forum!!!

Now your problem is your starter! Im not sure if the solenoid is seperate from the starter or if it is all one unit! But the starter should be on the passenger side of the engine block on the bottom! Can anyone verify this?

 

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery.
2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
3. Remove the electrical connections from the back of the starter.
4. Remove the bell-housing cover.
5. Remove the starter support bracket bolt from the engine block.
6. Unfasten the starter motor-to-engine bolts, then carefully lower the starter.
7. Remove the nuts/bolts that hold the starter support bracket to the starter.

Your right Suzuki-Guy, its on the passenger side.

Thats what i thought. If it was a truck I would be positive, but I have never owned a car. Ive owned six trucks though! All chevys of course! Good luck Ahimsaman!

Advance Auto sells them as a package deal. I found the starter in the front near the bottom. Seems pretty easy.

I found the starter in the front middle of the car. I traced the positive cable from the battery and it was easy to find once I looked good enough. Maybe my model is weird or something. It's a 2.2 regular motor.

I may need all the luck and skill I can get. I've owned this car for a couple of years. Bought it and it only had 35k miles on it and it is 14 years old. I'm thinking since it wasn't used much there are some corroded parts that weren't put under much load. I commute with it every day.
