Default taillight tint

well i have a 99 cavy and i just got it painted it black and had some black rims thrown on it, and i was wondering if anyone had some tips on how to tint the taillights. i tried just regular tint, but the contour is just too difficult to do, considering that this is my first time tinting anything. now i am looking at some other alternative i.e. VHT Nite Shades and i have also read about TesTors model paint being used on the tail lights as well. is there any way to use either of these options without going too dark?
if anyone could reply with advice or past experience that'd be great.

Don't use model paint. Its not made to stand up to weathering.
Nite Shades is really not very dark. You'll have to apply 3-5 coats to get them dark enough to really notice.
