Question Thermostat - 180F?

I have two Cavaliers. 2004 and 2003. Newer one runs average 34 MPG, '03 gets bare 30. I noticed the old one takes longer to warm up and never really reaches 195 degrees. So I started shopping for a thermostat, all I've found in online stores are 180F. I'm wondering if those actually start opening at 180 and keep it at 195? Or shall I search for a 195F one?

I don't think the 180 thermostat will allow the engine to reach 195 degrees. You need to buy the 195 thermostat to run that temperature assuming the rest of the cooling system is in good condition.

Hi Segfault,

Welcome to the Chevy Forums.

I'd keep searching for a 195' stat. If you can't find one from Advance, Auto Zone, Pep Boys, or NAPA, you may just have to break down and get one from the dealer.

And don't forget fresh Stant radiator caps for both vehicles.
