Default Transmission Slip Codes Showing but no apparent problem

Hi,

I'm wondering if someone might be able to share some insight on an issue that I've had no experience with but is a current concern.

I have a '98 Cavalier, bought it new and aside from the usual, hadn't experienced problems with it until last October when the fuel pump went and rusted parts began to give out. The car has 186,500 miles on it. It's quiet as a mouse and drives easy and smooth, on occasion over the past year there is a knock, it feels as though it's under the passenger side seat, I hear it infrequently. The car passed inspection just two weeks ago, though of course this may mean nothing.

While on a drive yesterday, the Check Engine light came on, I took it to a trusted shop this morning and the codes indicated transmission slip, I don't recall the actual number that came up. The mechanic who read the code directed me to a transmission specialist who after reading the same code, indicted that a new transmission would be necessary, this would cost $1200, essentially the car's value when it's in top condition. I wouldn't go through with the repair if this is in fact the case, given the years and mileage, I recognize the likelihood of expensive repairs unrelated to the transmission occurring. That fuel pump and the rust related repairs set me back a good bit.

I've been reading posts about transmissions gone bad and all seem to indicate that a failing transmission tends to make itself know with grinding noises and screeching; mine doesn't do this. I'm wondering if it's possible for a transmission to fail without any apparent indication via the functioning and performance of the vehicle, should I simply take the mechanic's word for it or might a second opinion be in order? Again, the ride is great.

186,500 is a big number, I love the car and though I would hate to put it out to pasture; if it's had it's final mile, then that's that, I got 16 good years out of it. But if if the issue might be something that requires less expense, a sensor, whatever, then it might be worth keeping. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

First thing i would check is the transmission fluid. It may just be low for starters.
