My son and I have a 1972 El Camino with a bbc 402. It currently has an automatic flywheel and we have most parts for the conversion to a 5 speed manual. My question is about flywheel I have for the manual trans. Is there a difference between the balance of the flywheel off of a 454 or larger and a 396/402?

yes the 454 is externally balanced the 396/402 is internally balanced thery cannot be interchanged .
