How can I find out if a 1964 Impala 327 has a 250 hp or 300hp engine?
Just nailed a deal on a 64 Impala from my mechanic - it's going to get a face lift (body work & paint)
It was sitting for years - then it went to this guys shop where it sat a long time.
When I put the first of 12 payments down - they used just starter fluid spray and it fired up with no valve clatter at all ... even with the oil having settled so long.
This thing looks rough at the moment - but seats and doors are like brand new and there is about 91k on the chassis
I was young when it was made

Google shows that there are a 250 horse power and 300 horsepower 327 in that year.
It's got duel exhaust if that matters - don't remember if they all had that or not! I was young when it was made

Anyone know what to look for to tell which it is??
I know it originally had A.C. which has been shredded except for evaporator and controls inside.
Since GM didn't start putting the partial VIN info on engines till 1967 (called numbers matching) there's no way to be certain the engine you have is what originally came in the car. You can assume it could be, if the date and application info jives, but that's it. To determine the h.p. of the engine, look for the suffix code on the block pad in front of the passenger side head, then look it up here: Chevy Camaro Engine Suffix Codes
Sorry - forgot to update this topic.
the plate on the cowl is almost impossible to read with my ol' eyes.
However; on the heads it has the two hump raised part and was told that those were the 300hp heads and the 250 had more of a triangular shape.
The source of this info has always been a 100 %er ... so - at this point I am slobbering like a hungry dawg
Also found out the 327 in this car was rebuilt by a restoration shop in the area.
From what I am gathering - the guy who sold it off had spent a ton of cash to get it nearly finished and then quit.
It ended up sitting in the guys yard for years until the body darn near rotted away - it so happens the shop I found this at does a decent body work and nice quality paint.
Not some Macco, Peach, or Earl Shives paint shops
and the deal to buy this includes body work and paint!
