Default Engine swap

I have a 2008 gmc canyon with 3.7. Has about 235 hp. Adequate but not exciting. I am wondering if a newer 3.6 with 308 hp is a direct swap and hookup, or whether serious mods needs to be done. Thank you for any input. Alternative is to boost hp on this engine, but that seems pretty limited for options.
