Default Transmission Fluid???

I have a newbie question to ask. Just out of curiosity, I recently was told by a mechanic that Mercon 6 is essentially the same as Dexron VI. Is this true? I was told that the specs are pretty much the same in the fluid. If so, is it safe to use Mercon 6 in a Chevy tranny? Again, just a question out of curiosity.....

Mercon 6 and Dexron VI are the same fluid. What year is your vehicle?

I have a 2007 Chevrolet Colorado. I also have a 2005 Tahoe. So, would it be safe to use on both? I know my 05 Tahoe requires Dexron III, but I also heard Dexron VI would be safe to use.

You can put Dex 6 in a Dex 3 car but not the other way around. Dex 6 costs alot more I would stick with the 3 in the 2005.

Sounds good. I'll stick with Dex III for cost with my Tahoe. Thanks for the info and quick response!
