Default New 454 Questions

Hay everybody, I'm James and this is my first post here.

I'm not new to engines or mechanic work, but I am new to big blocks.

I just purchased a 454 for my 1980 vette. it's a low compression, oval port head motor with just long tubes at the moment. The engine came out of a '78 dually built for forest fire rescue.

I'm looking for a way to raise the compression and the rpm to around a 9-9.5 and 6000-6500 respectively.

I have a tight budget (as in spend the least possible lol), so I don't mind workin with what I got and doing work to the heads, and just replacing the pistons, with a solid performing intake.

I'm just really looking to bring the motor to life, it has a ton of potential, and I want to bring the ponies out.

I'm open to everything as far as the engine goes, and if have anything you wanna sell (within reason), feel free to PM me.

-thanks

Welcome to the forum.

You can change pistons and/or heads, mill the heads, and change the cam to change the dynamic compression.

But the oval port heads will limit you to some extent on breathing capability. Also the low rise manifold doesn't help but unless you change hoods, you're stuck w/ it.

Good luck and let us know how it works out.

I m envious. Try changing the camshaft and opting for a ported intake.

Another thing is why do you want to run at 6000rpm? A Corvette is a different beast than a G30 1-ton or K3500. Low end torque may not be that attractive to you but in a car that weighs less than 1/2 the rescue truck did this thing should move like rocket with diarrhea.

What is your objective with this Vette? I mean, a 454 in a 3200lb car, is going to fly on a 1/4 mile or even at a stoplight.

Low end torque is the BBC's forte. Not known as a high rpm screamer like the SBC. But then it doesn't need to.

Yea, I drove a 14 foot U Haul Box van with a 454 in it, and that sucker MOVED! even at 10,000lbs. So in a Corvette it should really tear it up.

.........plus another thing I remembered today is the overall length of the car will be like 10 feet versus 30 feet for a rescue truck.
