I wonder if it's poorly trained oil change guys that are behind the problem. After my 1st oil change(about 4 km from my home) I drove home into a fairly strong wind-and when I stopped in front of my garage,I had smoke going at least 6 feet into the air-bad enough that neighbour ran over with fire extinguisher! When I went back to dealer, one of the mechanics knew right away what happened-said "happens all the time"-when oil filter was removed, oil was spilled down the side of motor-you could see a 3 inch strip where it ran.Apparently filter is hard to remove without spilling oil.I still wonder if there was any damage done-realized after I left that no paperwork had been done documenting it!

the korean built aveo's, optras were crap bombs in everyway. its a little early to condem the cruze based on the aveo. totally different platform. but I agree; time will ultimately tell.

I agree the Korean Aveo's are crap including the latest one Sonic in the US may have better build quailty. The instrument panel is totally mad and the rear drum brakes are poor. Anyway back to the Cruze I have owned mine for just over two years and may keep it longer, no warranty claims todate which I can not say for my previous BMW's Volvo. VW Toyota & Honda. The plastic in the Korean Cruze is rubbish but everything else is holding up very well indeed, the roadholding is excellent better than my previous cars, I am waiting to see if the CRUZE sold in the UK will come with a tyre pressure monitor, powered foldback door mirror, day notice lights (first appeared on Volvo back in 1976). I think it is about time that the rip-off manufacturers dropped for me the useless annoying auto lights & rainsensing wipers and why on earth do they not put a rear screen wiper on Sedans ?

Is there a horizontal wrench symbol inside? If so, it means "Service Vehicle Soon" for an issue not related to the emission control.

if the oil fill cap isn't seated properly it will cause that.

I checked it too-seemed fine.Oil is really dirty for only having 1700 km on it-OLM shows 74%. The odd smell I've been noticing for last while when starting (like coolant but not really) is same as oil.Feel somehow tied in to oil change in Jan.-they spilled a lot of oil, lots of smoke,no obvious flames. In hindsight, that was when I started noticing smell.

Now I get it-I have the world's worst dealer! Took car in-light magically went out! After arguing with me that the oil was dirt, decided that it was oil "probably just hanging around" since oil change Jan 10-never did explain how it found it's way to inside of hood-guess it fell uphill. On way home noticed strong smell of burning oil-spot about 3 x3 on floor by filter & many small spots, especially by hood prop.Went back-reaction was "oh well".Sounds like I wait to be #3 Cruze to go up in flames!
