Default 305 from the mid 80's

Hello. New member dropping a post on my first ever rebuild project. I picked up a complete 350 (or so I thought) with a factory 4 barrel from my mechanic. I thought it would be a good victim for a nervous, lack of confidence but to play around on. My plan was to tear down and inspect, replace crank, connecting rod bearings, rings, etc. and lap head valves, replace springs and a new can shaft. Lo and behold, I get it in the stand and check out the serial number and it's a 305! I was a little crushed, but had put enough effort into getting it home I decided, what the heck, continue on! Head serial number indicates they are the higher compression heads and lifter valley bottom end look very clean. When I drained the oil nothing settled in the pan. I will have lots of questions so best with me. My plan is to rebuild as mentioned above with the intent to hopefully make a solid engine that produces 250-275 hp. (Mild cam and new lifters, new springs and a high rise intake and headers. Mild porting/polishing on the heads.) Sorry for being long winded!
