'09 equinox towing a travel trailer

'09 equinox towing a travel trailer
I have a '09 equinox and pull a 2000lb trailer with a 3.4L v-6 5 sp auto.
does anyone do this?
My concern is the auto trans, and the position "I" on the shifter
Is that like the "tow haul" on a chevy truck??
mine constantly shifts back and forth when going up grades and in a little wind.
the tachometer goes from around 3000rpm going on level plain
then when a load is applied it will go down to 2000rpm like shifting into a
higher gear, then it shifts into a lower gear raising the rpm to 3500 or
almost like in "passing gear" And it will do this constantly. or until i get on level highway again.
I am definately confused.

i DONT PULL TRAILERS WITH THE SHIFTER LEFT IN D ON MY VAN I LEAVE THE SHIFTER ON 3 SO THE TRANSMISSION DONT HUNT ALL THE TIME. LIKE THIS YOUR TRANSMISSION WILL BE HAPPY. FOR YOUR CASE SINCE YOU HAVE A 5 SPEED TRANSMISSION I GESS YOU HAVE TO LEAVE IT ON 4. GM AND OTHER MANUFACTURERS DONT RECOMEND TO PULL TRAILERS IN OVERDRIVE
