Default Defrost fan causes car to vibrate and stall

I have an appointment at a garage on Monday, but am trying to prepare myself for what repairs may be needed on my 2010 Equinox. The car was fine on Tuesday then Wednesday morning I started it and turned on the heat and fan to defrost the windshield. The car started to vibrate. I heard a faint squealing sound and then it stalled. It runs fine without the fan turned on. As soon as I turn the fan on there is vibration, squealing and it stalls. Any ideas on what this could be and the possible costs I am looking at? Thank you for any help you can provide.

Defrost mode also turns on a/c compressor. Squealing is probably the drive belt. I'll bet you have a problem with the compressor or associated pulley system. To verify, turn on a/c and see if the problem repeats. If it does, you can remove the belt and spin individual pulleys to find the problem component. AND please keep fingers & clothes away from spinning parts!!

Thank you Rednucleus for your reply. I have been concerned it is the AC Compressor. I am terrified at what it will cost to fix.

It may just be a pulley or clutch; good luck!
