My keyless remote starter will not turn on my 2008 Chevy equinox. When I try to start with remote starter I only get a click sound under the hood. It will unlock doors with no problems. so i can't be the remote battery.

I wouldn't completely rule out the battery... but since it does unlock it should be communicating... I would suspect that some other required criteria may not be being met for the remote start to work....but a fresh battery never hurts

Make sure all doors, hood and trunk latches are fully closed, open and close everything to make sure...
If you have any check engine light is on the remote start won't work, if you have had any recent check engine lights on, it may not work due to the stored code...
