Can anyone tell me if the throttle body is covered under the power train warranty. I have searched thru here and other forums and seen that some were replaced under the warranty and some were not.
I have a 2010 with 70k miles on it. I was told today that the throttle body was bad and needs to be replaced. I thought it would be covered but was told by the dealer it was not.

I am sorry, but the throttle body assembly is not covered by the Powertrain Warranty for 2010 vehicles.

how can it be? isn't throttle body is a part of the engine? its like to say that bulb is not the part of the lamp. WTF GM?

Your'e right, it's not covered...grrr!! However, the part is defective which should be a GM problem and not a problem of the consumer!!!

Here's what happened to me....
On 01/23/13 I was driving on the highway going 70 mph with my son and my car suddenly wouldn't accelerate my engine light came on and a message came up that said stabilitrak turned off and the reduced engine power light came on. My car immediately went to 25 mph and we coasted to the nearest exit.

After pulling out the manual, we turned off the car for 15 seconds like it said to "reset" it. The car started, no lights, but as we were driving off, it did the same thing, stabilitrack turned off, engine light came on and reduced engine power came back on. We called our mechanic at the dealer and after they got the car and looked at it we were told it was a problem with the throttle body which was not covered under our "engine for life" warranty. We later received a call that the part was defective and there was no replacement part at this time.

After a week of waiting, I called GM and spoke with their customer service who said we would have the part in 2 days. Of course two days came and went and we received another call from the GM district specialist that there is no replacement part but that discussions would be started on 02/06/2013 regarding the part. I asked why the part hadn't been recalled and was told that only the government could issue a recall, no GM, and that we would have to wait to hear from them.

We received another call from the GM district specialist yesterday, 02/07/2013, who said there was no new updates and that we would know something on the 15th. I explained to her that I find this totally unacceptable and where could I pick up my replacement car at no additional expense to me. I find it hard to believe that GM can make a car part that unfortunately is defective but has yet to do something about it.

Obviously we are not the only ones who have had this trouble. Thank goodness for our dealer who has been super to us throughout this whole ordeal by giving us a loaner vehicle. For that we are thankful!!

Actually, the throttle body is technically not part of the engine; at least not by the definition which GM/Chevrolet has specified.

That's BS. Any car company can issue a voluntary recall if they deem it necessary. Toyota did it a while back for a different problem shortly after their sticking throttle fiasco. The real answer is that the government has not forced GM to issue a recall - so why should they?

Well my car has been at the shop for about two weeks now, and I was told that the part will not be available for at least another 4 to 8 weeks.
Chevy will not cover the part under the warranty, which I am ok with. I know it is not part of the powertrain and I am fine with that.
They are covering the cost of the rental car for the time my car is not drivable. Which I think is comendable.....I cant be without a car for two months.
The problem that i have is the fact that a part that fits on so many different makes and models is on back order for that long. I called the parts place that I deal with at work and he can get me a new one tomorrow....but GM is 8 weeks out.....with the amount of money they are paying for my rental for the next 4 to 8 weeks....they could have bought many aftermarket throttle bodies.

Since it is not being repaired under warranty, they are not required to use OEM parts. You should ask the dealership if they'll install a part that you buy from a parts place. If you get an AC Delco part (same as OEM) they should have no problem with this. Also, no one has said if they have the 4 cyl or 6 cyl engine. I included part numbers for both below.

AC Delco p/n 217-3428, GM p/n 12631186 - 2.4L 4 Cyl (2010-2011 only)
AC Delco p/n 217-3103, GM p/n 12616994 - 3.0L 6 Cyl (2010-2011 only)

Wouldn't the aftermarket part be designed in the same way the GM part is? The problem isn't that there aren't "parts". The problem is the design of the original part is defective, causing the issue in the first place. I was told by GM that they are having discussions starting this next week regarding the re-design process and should know more on Thursday (02/14/2013). My dealer however was told he would know something on Friday. I didn't hear from him so I'm not sure if he was given any more information or not.

My thinking is though even if GM came up with a newly designed part next week wouldn't we still have to wait until the part was tested before it was released??

I really believe if more people would contact GM to let them know that their car has this issue something would be done in a more timely manner. Waiting four weeks and counting to have a car fixed is ridiculous!

These are good points. I'm still wondering how the original design "defective". From an electrical standpoint, the throttle body is a relatively simple part. They probably won't need to test the new part because they won't be making a part that is 100% new. They will just make necessary changes to the existing design. GM is not careless, it's just that very little testing would be necessary. Any other brand would likely do the same thing.
