Default Installing Tach in 1988 Chev 30 Van , Help

Hi , I have a 1988 Chev that I want to install a tach in . It has a 350 with external coil. on top of the coil there are 2 clips with 2 wires . Each clip has a white and red wire . The green wire has to be attached to the neg coil wire . I cant see any neg or - mark on the coil . I assume the white wire would be the neg but one never knows . Also where should the wire be attached on the wire going into the coil or the wire between the coil and the distributor?
Is the white wire the one and which side of the coil ?
Thank You for any help
