Gracie's ride

On my 2500 2019 Chevy Express van sliding doors, there are two metal shields that cover part of the windows on the sliding door.
What are they for? Can't be for break in since anyone could break the glass and reach inside to the handle. Are they for some kind of support? Can I remove them?
