I just came up with 500 watts divided by 13.4 volts =38.46amps. My electrician friend said 6 or 8 gauge wire.

One of the main benefits of having a second battery is being able to run things with the engine shut off. A fully charged lead acid battery at rest should be around 12.7 V, and the voltage will go down as you use it.
