Default Removing rear Brake Drum

I have a 2002 1500 Express conversion van & want to replace the rear shoes. According to the service manual the auto parking brake adjuster must have a "pin" put in before removing the drum. Is this necessary or can I just back off on the star adjusting wheel to remove the drum?

thanks, bluegold
