02 express 1500 rear end noise
My van's rear end squeals like a stuck pig. Mechanic wants $1200 to fix it, but im thinking about getting a salvaged rear end off craigslist. $$$$ really tight. I found one for $300 a couple of hours drive away from me, parted out van with 110k (locked motor), but am wary of making the drive to find a polished turd. Seller says its in good condition... Any advice? Ive done a lot of work on motorcycles but nothing on cars/trucks. I would probably have a mechanic install the used rear end.
Also, how long can I get away with limping the van around? Not a daily driver, but maybe 50 miles a week, tops. What am I damaging when driving this thing?
Thanks

I paid $1,735 about 7 years ago at my mechanic for a rear differential. But that is in NYC where everything costs more, since then I haven't had any problems. I make sure they check the oil level back there every now and then. It is very easy to overlook the rear differential.
I haul heavy loads with my van but not on an everyday basis, that along with low fluid was the cause of it for going bad.
