Default 2001 GMC Savana 3500 obd question

My 1 ton Savana has a unique OBD system. My generic OBD 2 scan tool and the ones at parts stores will not pull codes! My brother inlaws expensive snap on scan tool will. I've read 1 tons in some years were an obd 1 1/2 or something but there is very little information about it. Wondering if anyone has experiance with it. I'm tired of chasing down my brother inlaw every time I need codes (with this van I need them pulled a couple of times a year at least) I'd like to get one that works with it!

what scan tool are you using? What modules are you trying to pull codes from. cheap code readers will only pull "P" or powertrain codes not "U" undefined, B body, C chassis codes.

if you want to retrieve these codes; get your wallet out.

I have a cheap Acutron or something like that. I wont pull anything from that van lights up attempts to scan and comes back with an incompatible message. Other cheap scanners have the same problem. Its the p codes I want. I get nothing..

if the scan tool is powering up there must be power on the orange wire/pin 16 of the dlc which powers the scan tool. if there is no power at pin 16 check the pwr aux fuse 7 in the I/p fuse panel.

as far as I know this vehicle is obd2 compliant. I know Nissan vehicles from 96-2000 had both odb1 and ob2 connectors as part of a grace period as they were not fully obd2 ready.
