Question 5.7 Vortec Timing prob? 2000

I just replaced the intake manifold gaskets in this passenger van and now it drags the starter really bad and dies after stabbing the throttle. Once I get it started it runs very good at idle. Chev dealer says that you have to sinc the distributer but won't tell me how. Anyone have any ideas. I have all the tools to do just about any repair, just not this little bit of knowledge. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance

If you positioned the distributor right you need an OBD2 scan tool to set the timing.

The scan tool must show data, it can not be a code reader only.

Question

When you say code reader do you mean a scanner that just pulls numbers? Or one that will pull numbers, give definitions, and clear codes?
I have my eye on one for about $225. There are many to choose from and I want to get something that will benifeit me in the future that I can use on other vehicles as well.
