83 Chevy G20 A/C cowl question
Good morning gentle beasts
I think this is the first time I have posted on the boards, but have watched and used this boared as a resource for a couple years now.
I'm in the middle of changing out my evaporator and heater core. The A/C as you may suspect is an R12 system (which has a leak in it), so I'm converting it to 134A. The heater core is good but while I have the Motor out (that is another story) I'm trying to update both of these while everything is accessible.
My question is: (In the Engine bay) there is a wiringconnection made at the top of the cowl (on the outside), just in front of where the a/c condensersets (on the inside). When you remove the 2 screws and remove the component from the Cowl, it is connected to what looks like a small wire coil heater element? Does anyone know what this is?

Yes, I believe I do. It's the resistor unit that varies the speeds of the fan that blows the air into the passenger cabin. The fan switch inside delivers voltage to the different spring elements that drop the voltage so the fan can run at slower speeds. Since the resistor element gets hot, they place it in the cowl so air blows over it. The other brand cars and trucks I've worked on over the years have a similar component. Sometimes it burns up and needs to be replaced. I've found it to be a fairly inexpensive component to replace.

Would anyone know why these 2 holes are in the defrost door? It looks like some foam or rubber was attached to the whole door at one time. there are staples across the bottom like a flap was stapled to it.
I'm just trying to get it back to functioning as best as possible.

Yeah, i've been searching the internet, looking for pics of others and such with no luck. I think Im gonna just leave one open. Then I'll atleast be half right. haha

ok, so I'm getting close to the end and I have been searching for a:
"evaporator core water core filter"
with no luck. Not even a plain one regardless of make or model.
Can anyone suggest a suitable replacement?
I'm also in search of a "Fan Motor cooling tube". Mine has a hole in it. I believe where it has been rubbing on the over flow tank. I thought of using vacuum hose, but the turn is so tight that I think it would kink. Maybe I will just put shrink tube over it.

One thing I've noticed on just about any car I've owned is that there's always a little airflow through the defroster vent no matter what position the control is in. I even remember reading that in an owners manual.
I'm surprised that you haven't been able to find a cooling tube online. The heat shrink idea sounds like a good one.
