Default 90 G20 Firing Problems

Hey all,

Ive finally had some time to get out and work on the van that has been sitting for a couple months now because it doesnt run currently. Prior to it being a 3/4 ton paper weight I had replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump, fuel pump relay, air filter, one fuel injector (kinda broke it trying to get it back in), tbi gaskets, distributor cap and rotor, all plugs and wires, and the coil pack.

The day that I replaced the cap and rotor was also the same day that I replaced the plugs and wires. Well unfortunately I was called into work and let my buddy (who its more mechanically inclined than I) handle the rest of the cable and plug install. Some how he had forgotten to mark anything and just threw it all together. So since then I have been working to find out the proper placement of cables to the distributor cap.

Working on it last week I think I may have finally discovered the proper placement. But when starting it, it sounds as if the injectors are spraying air rather than gas, although it is spraying gas. Listed below are the diagram I used for the firing order; what I have the cables set to; and a video of me trying to start it.

In the image below, I have the cables rotated 1 position clockwise. Where I have the 7 and 5 on the battery side instead of the 2 and 7. The reason I have it set this way, is because it has given me the most response and was the closest to actually working. Am I crazy for thinking this?? Should I move them back to the actual spot?

As you can hear in the clip, it sounds as if it is spraying air. I am not sure if there was just a build up of air somewhere or what...

If anyone has any questions or suggestions, I am all ears.

Thanks,

Highlander

I'm not the greatest mechanic, but if I had this problem, I would unhook the wire from the coil to the distributor and remove the #1 spark plug. Crank the engine/turn with wrench until you find #1 TDC on the compression stroke. Remove distributor cap and see where rotor is pointing. That will be where your #1 wire goes in relation to the cap. Then install the rest of the wires in order. Someone else can probably tell you an easier way.

Ton of Fun,

Much appreciated, will give this a whirl today. Its been quite frosty here and I dont have a garage to work on the van in so process has been slow. But its a little warmer today so we will see.
