If you want better fuel mileage get the diesel. I just got a Canyon with the 2.8 duramax and it is amazing. It would have to at least double your mpg in the van... making it worth the investment.

Diesel fuel economy looks attractive, but there were always a few drawbacks that steered me away

You pay more up front for the engine, and for parts & maintenance in the long term, no to mention DEF.
They feel kind of sluggish and unresponsive. Especially on the highway. The 2.8L only has 180hp.
The smell. They sound like tractors. You can hear them coming from a mile away, and you can't even hear someone talking up close. But that was the big Ford powerstroke, so maybe these little ones are better.
I would still have considered one, had it been offered, which is the other problem. Only available on very limited configurations. No AWD.

Diesel prices here have been going up which would make me a bit hesitant too.

What has been your experience?

When I was driving 80s Suburbans I got a diesel. I did the research and found that the difference in fuel economy was not enough to overcome the added cost of diesel fuel. So I sold the diesel without ever putting it on the road.
