best way to drive with overdrive?

best way to drive with overdrive?
I burned up the transmission on my way down the baja penninsula I am in the process of getting it fixed and wanted to know if driving in overdrive up and down the hills would have anything to do with it going out? When there are alot of hills is it better to drive in drive instead of overdrive?
