I have an 08 chevy express van with 4.8l and just out of nowhere I’m consuming a lot of fuel.I went threw almost half a tank just idling in traffic on the freeway for 45 mins.the check engine light is not in.there is no visible leaks anywhere .it’s doesn’t seem to idle rough in gear .any help would be great.thank you
First thing I would check is the fuel gauge sender.
Component Testing
Ignition OFF, remove the fuel level sender and verify there are no obstructions interfering with the fuel level sender.
⇒ If any interference is present, repair the fuel sender interference.
Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the fuel level sensor.
While sweeping the fuel level sensor through its full range of motion, test for a minimum resistance value of less than 41 ohms and a maximum value greater than 119 ohms between the signal terminal and low reference terminal listed below:
• Signal terminal B (4.3L, 4.8L or 6.0L)
• Low Reference Terminal C (4.3L, 4.8L or 6.0L)
⇒ If not within the specified range, replace the fuel level sensor.
Another way to test an incorrect fuel sender unit without removing it is to fill your tank and record your number of gallons.
See if it make sense with your gauge reading you had before filling it up. Your stock tank capacity is 31 gal.
Also keep in mind that your gauge could be defective only at some points. i.e. only at around 3/4 full while
reading correctly at other levels.
