Lightbulb G20 fiberglass high-top options - removal, roof rack, etc.

I've found a great deal on a 1993 G20 conversion van that I'm wanting to turn into a rugged utility camper & was wondering what options I have concerning the high top roof. I'd like to either:
-Remove the high-top to make room for a much needed roof rack & maybe have a closable open-air roof option
-Replace the high top with a pop-top like my old VW buses! (Highly unlikely, but dreamy nonetheless! LOL)

SOMONE has surely removed a high-top before and done SOMETHING other than leave the hole open, right?

Yakima has an option to attach a roof rack directly to the high top using their truck camper set-up, but the van will get VERY tall with kayaks on top & I'm worried about wind issues on the highway when loaded. Plus, how sturdy is fiberglass that's been sitting on top of a van for 18 years? I'm envisioning cracks and all sorts of mayhem after a few (or ONE!) drive to a campsite with gear on top if I go with this option.
