Default HOW TO test for leaks from the evap system

Hey,
I got a 2015 chevy express 2500. I've got a gas smell but no codes and no gas leaks. How do I go bout smoke testing the evap system? Guessing I should start by disconnecting the line at the cannister and seeing if it's clogged? a clogged cannister would cause fumes to leak out right? I don't really have any trouble refueling though. I have a little trouble sometimes with the pump thinking it's full. perhaps the cannister is partly clogged? anyways how Do I get the solenoid to close without a scan tool? Also how do I get these little connectors off? these things are tricky and in a spot I can't see. I do HAVE A diY SMOKE MACHINE
