Default Short in stop light - where to start?

The bottom left side stop light shorts out when the lights are turned
on: flashes very slowly. It's a 1157 bulb, 2 filaments, but only 1 lights up. I changed the bulb - that isn't the problem.
All the other lights work correctly.
'97 Express van, came with trailer wiring harness that is connected to both 4 and 7 pin connectors. I'm the original owner.
Where doI start checking? Is there any way to activate the brake light, other than the pedal, so I can work on this alone?

You can pull the brake switch off the column

You don't need to push the pedal that much to engage the switch. I just wedge a stick in there.....
Check the grounds and the bulbs on the other side. The 1157 is notorious for causing weird issues if one of the filaments breaks off and welds itself to the other filament.
Flashing slowly usually means a bad flasher module. Swap the hazard and flasher module to see if it flashes faster.
