Starter van step 80
hi
new here so I hope I can explain problem I have a 5.7 step van 80 model chu 31442
recently i tried to start it and it made a very weird grinding sound when i turned the key i stopped waited tried to start sound was not as loud or bad truck started drove it to place and when i went to start tun key nothing
I hear now just a slight sound comming from engine lower area. would the starter make a grinding noise
I am assuming it is the starter if so what are the steps to remove and replace?
and any idea what I should look for in price rebuilt? New ?
thanks oh model chu 31442 5.7 liter

sounds like the bendix took a dump on ya....
was barely throwing the gear out weakly and the teeth were grinding against the flywheel teeth.... starter replacement is easy, and should be extra simple on a step van.
check the flywheel teeth for abnormal wear, it could also be a bad spot on the flywheel teeth that was the original cause of the problem
edit: and yes i agree, go for the lifetime warranty, its not unheard of to get a weak/bad starter right out of the box with todays less then stellar manufacturing
