'01 Burban LS stereo works, but no bass/tinny sound

Hello all,
I have a 01 suburban LS w/ the factory setup. All speakers and sub work, but no punch. I have to set the fader almost entirely to the rear speakers in order to make it sound like they are balanced front to rear. Also, even with bass set all the way to maximum, it is still tinny (too much treble, not enough bass).
My questions:
1) Does the upgraded stereo in these cars have a different head unit/amplifier? If so, is upgrading easy, and will that fix problem?
2) Do I need to switch out all speakers, including sub?
BTW, I have zero interest in a non-factory look. I don't want to mess with trying to make theft system, etc work with a replacement head, and I don't like the non-factory look of replacement head units.
