Talking 1978 Holden Kingswood running a 454 BBC

G'Day All

As you can tell i am from the other side of the pond in Australia and am finding it difficult finding someone over here that knows these torque monster blocks well enough for my liking! so here i am hoping for a bit of a hand in pointing me in the right direction..

What i have is the following problem, im looking for a good cam to replace my clapped out one. I have only just recently purchased the car and was not aware of the damage that was lurking within.

Turns out the lifter on Cyl 1 is missin a considerable chunk and the cam has been ground down. So now i am in the final stages of pulling the motor out for a full clean and so i can inspect the bottom end and hope for no damage to the big end and crank ect. Dont like my chances at getting away scott free however might get lucky and only need to re build the top end!

Now as for the car these are the details that i have access too [via all the casting numbers ect]

The block is a 1986 BBC with the engine casting number of 14015445

The heads are casting number 353049 open style 113cc

As for the performance mods on the car it has the following.

- 2" headers running to a 3.5" collector and twin 3" dual exhaust with balance pipe dumping at the rear
- Holley 700 - 750? carb
- Edelbrock Performer RPM manifold
- New crane roller rockers and beefed up push rods [found the damage to the lifter/cam when installing these}
- New fully rebuild TH400 gearbox with stage 3 shift kit and 2500-2800 Tiapan stall converter

Now, based on the limited information i have above what CAM do you think would be the best suit for great low to mid power? I am looking at getting a full cam kit so lifters, springs, retainers, double row timing chain ect ect so i can redo the top end essentially. Not looking to do any machine work as the closest place that can do this is 4 hours away!

I have been looking at this kit from Howards cams but am worried it may be a touch too big for my torque converter?

something like the kit in this link from ebay.
http://http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/11...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

And as for the above cam kit im not sure what my compression ratio is? this kit says i need a ratio of 9.5:1. Would my heads / block be in this realm?

As for what i'm using the car for, she is a weekend toy, something that will be driven to shows, drag meets, cruises ect and will no doubt cop a flogging. I do want decent drivebillity for cruising ect though so i'm in a hard place as i believe cams either do one thing or another?

I am very open to thoughts and opinions.

Thanks in advance
