Default 2010 Traverse overheating

Noticed that my fan was running after I turned the car off and upon further inspection I noticed it was overheating. This was odd because it is only 5 years old. This happened once before and I took it in and was told it was my water pump. When I got it back it was working fine and not overheating at all. It was like it never overheated running fine.(temperature wise) Very odd because if it were the water pump it should have immediately overheated again. Well two months down the road it is doing pretty much the same thing again. I have read a lot of complaints about this particular model and I'm starting to regret buying it. I don't have a six figure income and still owe quite a bit on this car so unfortunately I have to fix it. It is no longer under warranty and for the dealer just to check it I have to scrape up $120 that will be a rip off, so can anyone give me any insight. From what I've read it could be the thermostat, thermostat sensor, or the water pump (hopefully there is nothing else). Or should I just replace the water pump and go by the first diagnosis.
