Default 2013 chevy equinox intermittently goes completely dead.

Sometimes you get ready to start the vehicle, turn the key to on and there is no electrical at all. No lights, no beepers, nothing on the dash, no radio, nothing. After sitting for some time it can sometimes just come to life and everything is fine. Sometimes it will be non responsive and then when you pop the hood with the ignition key turned on it will come to life (that has happened twice).
I have put a ground wire from the battery to the engine and then to the body to rule out a bad ground connection. The battery is in good shape. The terminal connections are in great condition. First notice of problems was when the key turned to on, the dash registered normal until i tried to start it. Then everything went dead. The key was stuck, the gear shift would not move, no radio and so on.
I haven't got a clue as to the problem. The only thing that has been consistent is the popping of the hood with the key turned on. And this seems extremely stupid. The only thing I can think is that popping the hood turns on the hood open sensor that some how causes the electronic system to decide to work again. I know, I know. That sounds completely crazy. Any ideas?? They can't be any crazier than mine.
