3spd to 4spd conversion
I have a 1989 Chev with a 350 equipped with a 3spd. Was wondering what would be required to convert the 3spd over to a 4spd. Is it as simple as installing the 700r4 and away we go or is their more to it?
Thank you

I had a 89, single cab long bed. I did the 4spd to the 3spd swap. 4 the 700r4 you'll need a shorter driveshaft. you can prolly find one out of a junkyard. also the most important part, there is a throttle valve cable, T.V. cable, runs from the transmission to your throttle body. This is a very crucial piece of the trans. It must be adjusted correctly, I never could get it right. If the cable is not there or not adjusted correctly the 2nd and 4th gear clutch packs will burn up fast. To adjust it correctly take it to a very well established trans shop. hometown shops are usually great. I'll also post a link about how to adjust it yourself, once i find it. With the shift linkage I didn't have to do anything. But I went from 4 to 3. The shift needle didnt work anyway.

This is TCIs' instructions to adjust the cable. There should be a tab on the bottom of your throttle bracket on the TBI for one end of the TV cable. If you don't want to deal with the cable, http://www.tciauto.com/whatsnew/File...valvebody2.pdf check out that link. It's a constant presure valve body. Also a full manual valve body would cut out the need for the cable entirely. one more thing. there is a bracket behind the TBI that a part of the TV cable clips into. Thats where you adjust it.
