Default 4wd help

I have an 03 1500 z71 and I noticed when I went to lock it in 4wd there is a loud grinding noise up. It does have the push button and I can hear the transfer case locking in but when I start driving there is some popping and grinding. Where do I begin looking? If makes a difference the torsion bars are turned all the way up

You didn't say which 4WD...

If you hear the grinding when in 4HI, it's probably coming from the front differential.
If it's only when in 4LO, then it's probably the Transfer Case.

It may be too late, but you could try changing out the Fluids in your Differentials and Case. Have these Fluids been changed out regularly ?
